We caught up with the lovely Henah Parikh at em-pact about changes you can introduce to make your company events greener. When planning events, there are so many points to consider to ensure you reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible. Thanks to Henah for your contribution to our blog and for your valuable tips and advice on how to get better at greening events.

Over to Henah…
If you’re like us at em-pact, you’ve attended conferences, galas, or trade shows where waste is everywhere. At the end of the event, garbage bins are overflowing with old tablecloths, used utensils, and dirty plates and cups. But what if we could create more eco-friendly events, harnessing sustainable options that help reduce our waste?
Today, we’re sharing ways to be more eco-mindful when hosting events, using the 3 R’s as our guiding principle: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
When coordinating for an eco-friendly event, be mindful through the entire planning process. Can you work with vendors who are eco-friendly as well? Can you send out e-invites or invites on recycled paper? Here are some tips you can use throughout the process:
- Be as specific as you can when ordering food to ensure as little food waste as possible. Think through which items might come with a lot of plastic or single-use wrapping, and search for alternatives.
- Instead of opting for plastic tablecloths, consider renting or purchasing durable linens that you can reuse time and time again, or utilizing butcher paper that can be recycled easily.
- Can you find centerpieces or decor that can be recycled or reused? Our friends at Bright Endeavors create candles with soy wax that can be used, then returned for a cleaning + refilling.
- Ask for attendees to bring their own reusable bottles or utensils, instead of purchasing additional plastic cups, forks, or knives. (If you want to go the extra mile for a truly green event, consider using leafs instead of plates like the ones featured on Bough to Beauty Bespoke earlier this year!)
On the day of the event, educate your guests on the different ways this event is mindful of both people and the planet. Not only will attendees be more conscious about their waste, but they will also be both inspired and impressed at how carefully this event was designed. Keep an eye on the different waste receptacles to ensure waste is discarded of properly, and consider using a compost bin for food that’s gone uneaten (or if you legally can, perhaps donate any leftover food to a local shelter).
Over the long term, achieving a zero-waste event would be the ideal goal. In the meantime, there are so many steps we can take to execute events with sustainability in mind. If you have other ways to create eco-friendly events, we’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
